Joshua 19-20 Reflection:
There is mention of casting lots. Does this mean they gambled which lands each tribe would inherit in some instances and if so was it just destined to still fall in place how it was according to the will of God? Because it was prophecied beforehand by Jacob (Israel) and Moses prior to them receiving what they were promised.
Well, I wouldn't call it "gambling" for which lands each tribe would get, not in the sense of what we would consider gambling today. The "Casting of Lots" refers more so to the Urim and Thummim that was in the pouch on the breastplate of the High Priest. These, generally understood, were two different kinds, types, or colors of stones that when there was a decision that needed to be made and that decision required the guidance of God in it, they would divert to praying to God, asking Him questions pertaining to what decision needed to be made, and it was believed that He would answer their questions by means of the Urim and Thummim. It's also interesting to note that when God gave the command that these items were to be made and stored in the pouch in the breastplate of the High Priests, He also said that ONLY the High Priest was allowed to use them.
I have heard it said that we should or could consider the Urim and Thummim like modern day dice in a way. But I don't think this is an accurate picture of what they really were. I think the reference to them being like modern day dice is not doing justice to what they actually were and were used for, not that this is a "blasphemous" thing to say, but it is a bit disgraceful to the things of God to try and bring something He created and worked by/through to such a lowly level.
Here's a good article on the Urim and Thummim. Remember to take all that you read about such things with a grain of salt, always seasoned with prayer.
