Joshua 4-6 Reflection:
As the Lord's people pass over the Jordan for the Lord had receded the waters for them to pass on dry ground, He commanded them to take 12 stones in memoriam to the travels and carry them from the Jordan to their home. The priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant went before the people. As long as they were there the waters stayed parted just loke God did for Moses with the Red Sea. A reminder for the generations to come that the Lord kept His promise and led His people to the promised land and no matter what matter of travel or giants they had to face all was overcome by the Lord. These 12 stones represent the 12 tribes of Israel. These stones were NOT pebbles. They were carried on the shoulders of men and were heavy so it wasn't a tiny trinket, it was a landmark that was a testament to overcoming the trial and was placed on the other side of the Jordan. This has so many different spiritual meanings to it but it is such a beautiful event if you dig deeper into the Scripture and examine the parallels with Moses and Joshua and God's faithfulness to His servants.
So something in today's new testament reading that stands out to me is that the first witnesses of Jesus after birth were the shepherd. They were close by when called so they got to see the baby Jesus. The Wiseman didn't come till later on and yet the world puts the shepherd and Wisemen in the nativity when it plainly states they were there yet. The leaders of flocks got to see the lord first. Makes you wonder why that is. I think it was on purpose because Jesus chose shepherd as the leaders of his flocks as the first to lead. He always used shepherds as examples of what he wanted to lead his flocks of believers and it's just amazing that the Lord chose them to be the first witnesses of the new baby Jesus.
