1 Samuel 7-9 Reflection:

Israel is successfully judged by Samuel after suffering at the hands of the Philistines. Once the Ark is returned to them, the Lord delivers their enemies into their hands for their faithfulness. When Samuel grows old, he makes his sons judges of Israel but they become corrupt in their ways and it becomes an injustice to the people. They demand a king rather than a judge as if a judge appointed by God were not good enough. But a king would rule by strict guidelines and the people would have to follow the rules set in place by the king as well. This includes them having to abide in something similar to what we know as being drafted into war. There were many warnings Samuel gave to prepare them and he told them also if they cried to the Lord for this judgment it would just fall on deaf ears because they begged for this and they can't take it back no matter how harsh this king would be. Thus Saul was made a king.
